As part of activities marking the 2025 World Environment Day, the Ekiti State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Erelu Tosin Aluko-Ajisafe has called on residents to unite in the global effort to end plastic pollution and safeguard the planet for future generations.

This year’s Environmental Day theme, “Ending Plastic Pollution,” underscores the urgent need to tackle the escalating threat posed by plastic waste to ecosystems, public health and environment.

In a statement issued from her office, the Commissioner stressed the importance of sustainable waste management and responsible consumption in addressing the plastic crisis.

“Plastic pollution is not just a global issue—it is also a local one. In our markets, streets, rivers and farmlands, we witness the harmful impact of single-use plastics,” she said.
Aluko-Ajisafe urged every resident of the State to take deliberate steps—such as saying no to plastic bags, bottles and wrappers when viable alternatives are available.

She revealed that the Ministry, in collaboration with local governments and environmental NGOs will intensify Community sensitization, enforce environmental regulations and promote eco-friendly innovations. These include the adoption of plastic alternatives and the expansion of recycling programmes across the state.

As part of the celebration, a statewide environmental sanitation exercise and tree-planting campaign are underway, along with an interactive youth forum focused on environmental responsibility and innovation.

The Commissioner reiterated the Oyebanji-led administration’s commitment to sustainable development, pledging continued support for policies and partnerships that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly Goal 13 (Climate Action) and Goal 14 (Life Below Water).
The Ministry urged schools, businesses, religious institutions and households to take responsibility by reducing plastic usage, embracing reusable materials and properly disposing of waste.
