There was a palpable tension in Ekiti State as five persons who sustained degree of injuries were hospitalized after they were hit by stray bullets from the gun of an officer of the Ekiti State Agro Marshals in the state capital.
Investigation by TopNews revealed that the incident occured at Ekute area of Ado-Ekiti between five and six O’clock in the evening of Thursday July 11.
According to some of the victims and passers-by, there was a mild traffic congestion on the Ekute road due to a ceremony in the area.
The Agro Marshals vehicle conveying some officers were also said to be caught and thereby held down in the traffic.
However, it was alleged that one of the officers jumped down from the vehicle to clear the road for their vehicle and in the process he started shooting to the air and some of the bullets strayed and hit the victims among whom were his colleagues.
The respondents said it was obvious that the concerned officers was trigger frick and lacked the skills and training for proper handling of weapon.
However, while speaking with journalists on the development at the Police Clinic in Ado-Ekiti, two officers (name withheld) who were hit by the bullets claimed that it was an accidental discharge.
Meanwhile, the Commandant of the Agro Marshall Corps, Hon. Olamide Oni declined comment when he came to the Police clinic to check on the victims.
But from his conversation with the Police, Oni confirmed that the concerned officer had been arrested and would be handed over to the Police for proper investigation and that necessary actions will be taken over the development.
