The Team manager Seun Betiku, alongside other club officials and players, sustained degree of injuries in an attack by gunmen on the coaster bus of Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure; Ondo State, TopNews reports.
It was gathered that a ball boy from the club was also shot during the attack.
The incident occurred on the Benin-Ore highway while the team was en-route to Benin for a Nigeria Premier Football League match day 13 fixture against Bendel Insurance of Benin.
According to a statement made available to TopNews in Akure on Thursday, the Media Officer of Sunshine Stars Football FC, Michael Akintunde confirmed the attack by gunmen.
He said that those injured in the attack have been hospitalized. Additionally, he stated that the ball boy was shot, and the Team Manager, Seun Betiku, along with other club officials, who sustained injuries, have been taken to a nearby hospital.
“It’s saddened our heart to inform Nigerians, especially football lovers that out team was attacked few minutes ago along Ore-Benin Expressway to honour an a tie, against Insurance of Benin, scheduled for this weekend.
“Our ball boy was shot in the horrible attack, our team manager and other club officials including players are seriously injured.
“It took the intervention of officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps that helped rescue the injured officials and the shot individual to a nearby hospital.
“We hope you join us in prayers,” the statement concluded,” he said.
